The Sonrics Wizard (El Maguito Sonrics)

In Mexico, there is this company called Sonrics. They make candies that range from sweet and sour. But, they also put little toys or collectables that people have collected over the years.

For example, this guy has a huge collection of Sonrics toys that has spanned throughout his entire room!

The company started in 1983, Due to Sabritas wanting to sell candy but, instead of selling it themselves, They invented the company called “Sonrics”. When they were coming up with a family-friendly mascot to represent the side company, they chose a cute, fluffy, ball that could do some magic tricks. They called him, “El Maguito Sonrics”. Also known to Americans as, “The Sonrics Wizard”.

He has the power to make the branded candy appear, filling the happy faces of Mexican children everywhere. His golden wisdom and kind hearted appearance, made him one of the most recognizable mascots around Mexico. He is so popular that he gets some pieces of really cool fan art. For example, DrunkenFist, an artist online, drew his interpretation of the wizardly character in a anime, humanized style.

But like all things, there is always that one person who has a weird idea in their head so they make their own interpretation of a thing to make people uncomfortable. For example, at one point in time, there was a mexican company that was selling satanic versions of the purple wizard boy. Although, I personally think it’s pretty cool, some religious folks would be severely offended or pissed over the satanic depiction of the titular wizard boy.

Here is an added bonus of him doing coke. Complete with nightmare!

Overall, the history of Sonrics has always been pretty good. Until, they made a new mascot that replaced the old fluffy boy. He looks like a villan instead of a heroic wizard! This is a poor change on Sonrics’ part.

Rest In Peace, The Sonrics Wizard. You may be missed.

UPDATE: I almost forgot that Sonrics had weird and interesting commercials in Mexico. They capture the spirit of Sonrics very well, might I add.
